St. John Brebeuf High School Realism Art Contest 2021

Back in October, I had the honour of teaching a grade 9 visual arts class at St. John Brebeuf High school, my alma mater. We went through the fundamentals of realism using coloured pencils and I demonstrated a few basic techniques using Faber-Castell Polychromos coloured pencils on drafting film. It was such a joy to be in and amongst these young creative minds and I was truly inspired by their level of talent.

In an attempt to encourage these young students to pursue the visuals arts further and expand their skill sets, I created an art contest in which all students of the school were invited to draw this bear pictured below (relevance being that the bear is the school’s mascot). They could use any art medium they wished as long as it was executed in a realistic art style. The prize for winning is a professional full set of 120 Caran D’ache Pablo coloured pencils and a pad of white Clairefontaine Pastelmat paper; two art mediums I use regularly in my work. Total prize value: $350.00. 2nd place won a set of 24 Polychromos coloured pencils and a pack of pastelmat sheets. Total prize value $50.00. Please scroll down to see the amazing submissions for this year’s contest and this year’s winner.
